So here we are July 20th driving north on Interstate 95 in a ’92 Ford van with 170,000 miles on the odometer and a sign on the side that says “Transmissions by WILLARD”. Crazy you say? Nah, we just like the sense of adventure. Taking chances, having practically no reservations, using back roads most of the time, and wandering (or wondering, as the case may be) aimlessly at times is all part of the sheer enjoyment of this type of travel. We love it. Retirement is grand, no?
SOJOURN: We chose this name for our 2001 trip because we felt it was perfectly descriptive of our intent, and that was to meander our way through beautiful countryside, enjoy the nature surrounding us, taking paths less traveled, meeting new people, seeing some old friends, learning about different cultures, educating ourselves with history, and exploring new horizons. While doing all that we intend to stuff our faces with wonderful fresh seafood and even some of our own campground fare. Sure hope we don’t gain too much weight on this trip!
Our SOJOURN web pages will be a little different than AK2K’s were in that we’ll break the trip down into ten page increments so there won’t be so many buttons. We may also sprinkle the pages with thumbnail pictures and hope that doesn’t slow down the loading time too much. Click the links in the sidebar for the days and dates that you wish to view.
Our loose plan for this trip:
We will depart Jacksonville on Friday, July 20, 2001 on our trip north. We only have a very loose itinerary which is:
- Go to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. We’ll probably arrive there in 5 or 6 days. Spend a day or two there.
- Go to Quebec City which is about one day’s drive from Montreal. We’ll spend a day or two there.
- Then we’ll wend our way to North Sydney, Nova Scotia
- Sail from N. Sydney to Argentia, Newfoundland on August 8
- We’ll spend two weeks on Newfoundland (the island portion of Nfld.)
- Sail back to N. Sydney, NS from Port Aux Basque, Nfld. on August 22
- We spend a night at the Keltic Lodge near Ingonish Beach, NS August 22
- Tour around NS for 10 or 12 days
- Tour the New England states when the leaves are wearing their fall colors

Head back to Florida. Plan to arrive in Jacksonville around October 1st.
